Belagavi: The biomedical waste management plant was seized by the health officials of Belagavi city corporation on Wednesday. The action was taken following the improper management of waste and over dumping of waste than the existing capacity of the plant. Now, this plant has got the new threat of being closed permanently.

The Belagavi Smart City Ltd.(BSCL) has proposed to develop a theme park at the land of an existing biomedical waste plant at Old Belagavi area. Therefore, waste management plant has to be relocated to some other location. However, there is no specific land has been identified for this plant yet.

The biomedical waste plant is running from past several years at Old Belagavi. The Association of Medical Establishment is running this plant. But many complaints from the residents are made that the plant is creating huge pollution in the area as it is small in capacity and the biomedical waste generated in the city is huge and being dumped here.

After receiving many complaints from the residents, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) had issued a notice to the Belagavi City Corporation(BCC). Following it, the health section officials of the BCC inspected the plant and seized it on seeing the improper management of the plant.

The plant may be restart after getting an assurance to run it properly, but the city corporation has to search the new location for the plant. Because the BSCL has already got an approval for the development of the theme park in the same location.

After all these developments, the association of medical establishment has started searching for the new land near Kittur town. It is said that the biomedical waste will be relocated there in the next couple of months. But , nothing is yet clear over the identification of new land. The health officer of BCC Dr Sanjay Dumgol has also confirmed that the biomedical waste plant at Old Belagavi will be closed shortly and he got instructions from the higher officials for relocating it.
